  • Gently loosen the soil around the base of the garlic plants using a small shovel or garden fork. This helps prevent damage to the bulbs during the extraction process.
  • Carefully lift the garlic bulbs from the soil using your hands or a garden fork. Insert the tool a few inches away from the base of the plant and lift the bulbs gently, avoiding any abrupt or forceful pulling.
  • After lifting the garlic bulbs, gently shake off any excess soil clinging to the roots and outer skin. Do not wash the bulbs, as moisture can promote mold and reduce their storage life.
  • Bundle the garlic plants together by tying their stems in small bunches of about 6 to 8 bulbs per bunch. Hang the garlic bundles upside down in a warm, dry, and well-ventilated area with good air circulation. Allow the bulbs to cure for about 2 to 4 weeks until the outer skins become papery.
  • Once the garlic bulbs are fully cured, trim the roots and the stems to about 1 inch from the bulb. Leave the outer skins intact, as they protect the garlic during storage.
  • Store the cured garlic bulbs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place such as mesh bags, baskets, or well-ventilated containers. Avoid storing garlic in sealed plastic bags or containers, as this can cause moisture buildup and lead to mold.
  • Select the largest and healthiest bulbs as seed garlic. Label and store them separately from the bulbs intended for culinary use.
  • Handle garlic bulbs with care to avoid bruising or damaging the outer skin. Rough handling can lead to premature spoilage and reduced storage life and if you notice any bulbs with signs of disease or damage during harvesting, remove them from the batch to avoid spread.
