Garlic Farming

Garlic Farming

Garlic farming in Kenya presents a highly profitable opportunity when managed effectively. Commonly referred to as Kitunguu Saumu, garlic is a valuable member of the onion family and is considered a high-value horticultural crop due to its strong market demand and attractive returns.

We support our farmers throughout the entire farming journey — from the sale of high-quality seeds to land preparation, including irrigation system installation, planting, cultivation, harvesting, and marketing. Our end-to-end approach ensures that farmers receive the guidance and resources they need at every stage for a successful and profitable garlic farming experience.

Our Research

Saumu Empire, in collaboration with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), undertook a comprehensive research initiative aimed at enhancing garlic production and addressing the key challenges faced by farmers in the propagation, cultivation, and management of the garlic crop. Led by Prof. Esther Kahangi, the 18-month study focused on the Moyale variety—commonly grown in Kenya.

Through intensive fieldwork and laboratory improvements, the team successfully developed a groundbreaking hybridization solution. This innovation, now known as JKUAT-1, marks a significant milestone in garlic farming across Africa.

At Saumu Empire, we have since adopted this treatment across all local garlic varieties, ushering in a new era of improved yields and resilience for garlic farmers.

Improved Farmer Interactions

We have developed a platform called Robi App, designed to connect farmers with fellow farmers, agronomists, and various agricultural service providers. Through the app, users can share updates on their farming projects, seek expert advice, and find solutions to the challenges they encounter—creating a collaborative and knowledge-driven farming community.
